🌿 So-Ham Meditation: A Breath-Led Journey into the Self
🌿 So-Ham Meditation: Breathe Back Into Yourself
What if you could meditate without a mantra, a visualization, or clearing your mind?
What if your breath has what you're seeking already?
So-Ham (pronounced so-hum) is a Vedic technique of meditation through breath that allows you to become aware of you and what's going on around you without even realizing it. So-Ham translates to "I am That" in Sanskrit; it relates to your true self, unconditioned, aside from ego, fear and overwhelm.
But you don't need to be "spiritual" to do it.
To the Western seeker, this can just be a reminder to be aware of the self again from all the chaotic things that happen in our lives that can help recenter and realign🌬️ Here's How (It Takes 5 Minutes)
🪑 Find a comfortable, quiet space. Sit up, relaxed with your eyes closed.
🫁 Bring awareness to your natural breath—there's no need to control in this moment.
Inhale while silently telling yourself:** "So..."**
Exhale while silently saying:** "...Ham..."**
Continue for as long as you wish, but keep the sequence soft, gentle and steady. "So..." (inhale) "Ham..." (exhale). Let that mantra ride upon the breath like a little whisper.
And if your mind wanders—first off, welcome to humankind—just bring it back with no judgment.
Five minutes will be up before you know it. (Or two or ten; your breath will meet you where you're at
💫 Here's Why It Works (For Your Real Life)
It prevents overthinking without any effort because your mind is busy... just being.
It creates space before responding to that person who is talking to you (partner, kids, burnout).
It reconnects you to "you"—not the LinkedIn version of you, not the version on Instagram—it's the aware yet subtle consciousness beneath what's posed for display.
Incense is not needed, familiarity with Sanskrit is not required; just breath is necessary—yours for the taking, it's your birthright.
🧩 Take This Thought with You
"So-Ham reminds you: You're not your thoughts.
You're the one aware of them."
